As golfing grows in popularity worldwide, more and more travelers are seeking out the links on their vacations. In Greece, there are some courses to allow the visitor to explore a different kind of “Classic” Greece.
Numerous golf courses are in the planning process. One well-established facility that is anticipating a major expansion is the Glyfada Golf Course near Athens. This pine-studded course with a view of the Saronic Gulf islands is open all year-round, closing only on Christmas and Easter.
Other courses include the Corfu Golf Club on the Corfu island, the Porto Carras Golf & Country Club in the Northern Greece at Halkidiki (Chalkidiki) and the Afandou Golf Course on Rhodes. This last one is next to the aptly-named Golf View Hotel, which overlooks the David Haradine-designed course. A brand-new entry is the Costa Navarino Resort. Two courses are open already, and ultimately there will be several to choose from at this coastal resort in Messinia.
The Hellenic Golf Federation lists about 1,200 members throughout Greece. There is a P.G.A. office in Greece, located at the Glyfada course.
